this q has a smokey room r&b-heavy feel to it ... which works because the room usually is smokey ;)

What an effing show this was! Phriday Phillmore was great but last night was off the proverbial heezy! Phil was absolutely on fire! Haven't been thoroughly sold on Larry in the past- he seems to lose the melody sometimes when he's soloing but the last two nights swung my opinion- and great pedal-steel playing too. Phil intro'd Molo as The God John Molo and rightly so! Molitz was cooking and Jackie is fantastic! Saw them last at the Greek but they have gelled since then. The band knew how to rock and knew how to stretch it out aaalllll loose and rubbery too! Viola>Caution>Viola, Stephen>11>Unbroken Chain>Fire>Rider>Dew>UJB Holy Moley! Phil's voice was sweeter than usual too, I thought. Morning Dew and Unbroken Chain were both very well sung. The parade was great- thanks for the clips- hope someone has a video to post at tradersden or losslesslegs soon. Three different stilt walkers went down during the parade! It was chaos- I hope they were ok. The floats were cool-Thanks to everyone involved. Honestly, I have always loved Phil shows but haven't really taken me "there" the last couple of times but the last 2 shows have charged my batteries again! Fine fine time indeed!

the big blue dancing bear was great..looked like a giant dancing bear from the balcony...

there was another new orleans style-same chords as aiko song song by ivan neville at the end of aiko, before truckin--it was all melted together into the parade jam..

this show was GREAT!

the one more sat. night opener was perfect, and made me wish the grateful dead would have opened and not closed with that song--its a way btter opener than closer! brown eyed women was nice--pride of cucamunga..well, heyy, that me--and was FUN FUN FUN! bring out the rare stuff!
the jackie song of the set was good, something different, but it fit in well...the more i hear the jackie originals the more i like them..
then its time to go back to the old days, the days of the fillmore and the acid trips--the 60's psychedelic rock era:
old school first with the golden road-midnight hour-viola lee-caution -with some feedback-back into viola..good stuff!--a true nod to pigpen--and a great compliment to the fillmore show from the night before..

jackie really broke down the caution jam--asking Phil if phil had all he needs, phil responding with some serious phil bomb jamming...
both nights made me feel that someone gave jackie some serious old pigpen shows -from 68-69 era grateful dead, and jackie really channeled the old school pigpen energy. the harmonica was great when he used it, the improve during caution was nice..similar to the way jackie nailed death no mercy at the fillmore--this caution was definately a nod to the days of the good ole grateful dead -when they were just gettin started..a thank you to pigpen, in a way--jackie really channelled pigpen these 2 nights..

longest set break ever!..up there with the balcony jumper night at the warfield a couple years ago--endless endless way toooo long set break....
but the wait was worth it..as we got our groove on with the funk out new orleans part down break it down melt you face...shakedown...
shakedown was super funky lots of particle dude funk, and ivan neville on aiko was GREAT--he and paeticle dude really funkified the parade..the vibe on the place can be summed up easily during the parade:

every single person was having fun, smiling, grooving, and enjoying being together in that exact moment...good stuff!

truckin was ripping,-jackie and larry shredded it together...then, jack straw took the universe by surprise-and was nice. from nowhere to everywhere in just 5 minutes..

st stephen>the 11 was HUGE ad well played rock and roll--again back to the 69 era.....unbroken was good--not quite as good as the warfield in novemeber, to my ears, phils vocals started shaky but ended nicely, and the ending part after the whole break it down jam was nice and melodic. Fire on the mountain was good, not epic but solid..i know you rider seemed like a great way to end the show..

but NO they kept going.

morning dew was actually not the best. it was played well, and sung well, sounded good..BUT at 130 in the AM when everyone is really drained and tired, a sllllllllllllooooooooooooowwwww phil singing ballad like Dew really really really dampened the crowd energy-had they playd it earlier it would have been better for everyone...(or they could have just skipped it for th esake of the phlow) uncle johns was nice-but it was hard for most people to get back up and really let it all out after the dew slow down. dont get me wrong, i liked the music--but this was a lesson in song placement and time/place in a setlist..

box of rain was nice, bringing out jeff setzkorns wife to add to the organ donate vibe was nice and touching--though she did go a bit long for 152 a.m..-but, she deserved her moment--the box of rain was a nice short quick way to get us out of there ending at 204 am..nice work phil! (pride of cucamunga, unbroken and box of rain in one show..if oyu like phil--thats wa good thing)
2 great shows with lots of nods to the old school pigpen era..

one missed opportunity was having the "Uncle Sam I am" guy--who was runner up to the dancing bear in the costume contest--they really could have played US Blues and had that guy come back out to dance around the stage during it--would have been a great moment-straight out of the grateful dead movie..

the parade was lots of fun--really well done floats--very fun to look at, and obviously made with lots of good vibes.....the staff at the civic center was amazingly nice, and both nights were total open everything, no rules, no security vibe, no agro security dudes anywhere--good vibes, good times..
the east coasters would be amazed at how free we can be with our shows out here in cali, its a nice thing!

thanks to the band, and to well, everybody, what a fun weekend!

HAD A FUCKING BLAST. Wow.

1st set was ON, with most songs having party/liquor themes. The jams were tight but short, and the place kept going crazy with each tune. The energy was wild and the band stepped up.

Long set break...

The parade was insane. Wavy Gravy hanging off the front float; He's looking his age these days for sure, but it wouldn't be a party without him. Ivan Neville led the band for Iko, which to correct the setlist, was actually an Iko > They All Asked for You > Iko, but with all the visual stimulation of the parade nobody seemed to be paying attention. Ivan did the family proud and brought some New Orleans to this Carnival by the Bay.

From there, I thought the second set hit a funk between Truckin all the way until IKYR started up; it didn't match the energy or cohesion of the monster 1st set. Perhaps the parade knocked the band off-kilter. They had a hard time getting through Truckin', St. Stephen had a new fun arrangement but needed polish, and Larry miffed the clutch point of the Eleven, remeniscent of some "Dead" 03-04 trainwrecks of the tune. Fire on the Mountain was solid but there were no faces melting... It was all fun and high-energy, and the band is working together enough at this point that there were no real trainwrecks, but there were loose ends here and there during most of the second set. Unbroken Chain was beautiful, though. I thought the solid but otherwise uninspiring IKYR was going to end it for us, but apparently Phil had other ideas...

Dew was unbelievable. It was slow and deliberate, but absolute album quality shit. Seeing this was (almost) worth the price of the ticket alone. I thought THAT was gonna be the closer, and a fine one it would have been, but then... UJB... It was fun, though by that time many folks had already hit the exits, as it was very late. Great big long cathartic wild set. The band had it together by the end.

Box encore was well-played, but it was late and everybody was tired, including the band. A good positive note to go home on though...

All in all, the finest party I've seen in years, one that would have made Bill Graham proud. Leagues better than the MG party of a few years ago, and on par with the best of what Phil's done with this band or any other...

Long Live Phil!
